IMPORTANT - Incinerator News

HELP SAVE THE FUTURE OF ECCLES, MONTON AND WORSLEY

Campaigners and councillors unanimously rejected plans for an incinerator to be built at Green Lane, Eccles. (The former Mitchell Shackleton site.)

However, the developer has appealed the decision and we are now preparing for a Planning Inspectorate inquiry.

The campaign group are collating all the necessary documentation that will be needed to argue our case. To ensure that we are as effective as possible we need legal advice. This needs to be paid for.

So, we are appealing for donations to our fighting fund. Please make cheques payable to: Monton Village Community Association.

Send with a covering letter to: Say No Campaign, 24 Canal Bank, Monton, Eccles M30 8AF.

YOUR SUPPORT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

REASONS TO STOP THE INCINERATOR

1.     1000 extra HGV lorries per week on our local roads which are not designed for this volume of heavy traffic. Some of these will be carrying toxic waste which is a by product of the process.

2.     There is no guarantee that emissions from the 55 metre chimney will not be harmful to local people within a 10 mile radius. The air quality in the area is already close to EU limits. We have high rates of respiratory related health problems and do not want our children endangered further.

3.     The plant will include an anaerobic digester which processes food waste. Such operations are notorious for creating pungent odours.

4.     The incinerator operator, Energos, have a UK site on the Isle of Wight which does not have a good track record. It was closed twice in 2010 following continued breaches of dioxin emission levels. Earlier this year there were reports of Mercury emissions.  As a result, the Isle of Wight Council are changing their waste recycling policy to reduce its dependence on the “unreliable” incinerator plant on the island. Nick Dawber, md of Energos, described emissions that were 8 times over the limit as a “minor breach”.

5.     HGVs are noisy and they (not cars) emit NOx; a poisonous gas which affects respiratory health.

6.     Salford council have made a significant investment in developing the Bridgewater Canal to transform it into a tourist attraction to encourage people to make greater use of the waterways and the tow paths. This ambitious plan to rejuvenate Eccles/Monton/Worsley would be seriously compromised if the incinerator is allowed to be built.

7.     We recognise the need to recycle waste. This is being addressed by GMWD plan document; they rejected the Green Lane site for inclusion in their plans.

OFFICE HOURS

We are now encountering a very busy period for the golf club administration team. We are reconciling tills and balance sheets for accounting purposes. We have a major website and IT systems upgrade underway. We have preparation work for the AGM on March 14 and also are currently organising the subscription renewals making this is an extremely busy period.

In an effort to streamline the way queries are handled and give a better service to members we are closing the office to personal visits until 13:30 each day. Of course, if a member calls and makes an appointment that we can schedule into our day that is not a problem. If you make an appointment valuable time can be saved and proper consideration given to your query. This policy will be reviewed from time to time. We would be grateful for your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience.

Agronomist's report 24th July 2011

Mr. Paul Jordan

Chairman of Green

Worsley Golf Club

24 July 2011

Dear Mr. Jordan

Further to my visit to the club on 14 July, when I inspected part of the course with Nigel Smith, I have made the following notes.

The turf was dense and there was very little bare ground in the sward, showing an improvement from previous visits as a result of the effects of Primo Maxx growth regulator and a slightly higher nutrient input. The greens were firm and were putting well. The course was tidy and well presented.

I was told that comments had been received on the club forum regarding green speed. I was shown measurements of green speed taken recently using the Stimpmeter which showed that the greens tested had green speeds of 8.5 - 9 feet. In the instructions that come with the Stimpmeter, this is classed as a fast speed for a normal club golf. It would be possible to increase this somewhat for tournament play by lowering the cutting height for one-off occasions, such as Captains Day, but very close mowing over a long period would be detrimental to the fine grasses in the greens turf at Worsley Golf Club.

Nonetheless, it should be possible to tweak the greens management to improve green speed without cutting them too short.

Several factors affect green speed:

Mowing height on the greens has been at a bench setting of 4 mm recently, which is the lowest that has been used on the greens here. Prostrate bentgrass stems and leaves in the greens cause a nap in the sward which can affect green speed. They can be removed by verticutting or using a brush to raise them so that they can be mown off by routine mowing. It is possible to obtain a brush to fit on the front of the Toro mower, and a demonstration of this would show whether this would be a worthwhile investment. Alternatively, a normal topdressing brush could be just as effective.

Using Primo Maxx growth regulator has allowed mowing frequency to be reduced slightly this year. It may be that this is affecting speed as the effect of the regulator is starting to wear off before the next application.

This is the first year that this has been used and the greens staff will be able to interact with its effects better as they gain experience of it.

Vibrating rollers are already used on the greens from time to time but the use of other rollers, such as the Tru-Turf (used by my clients Woburn and The London Golf Club) can be looked into and demonstrations obtained, measuring the effect of these with the Stimpmeter if an objective measure of speed is required. (Bear in mind that any increase in rolling requires a matching increase in aeration to relieve compaction.)

Aeration of the greens had continued since spring, with the Sarel roller being used frequently since my last visit. 25 tons of topdressing had been applied on the day of my visit using the Dakota topdresser. Regular topdressing is important to level those greens that have been drained but also to maintain good putting surfaces generally, to dilute the thatch produced by the greens turf and to keep the greens firm.

Deep roots (120 mm) were seen beneath the greens as a result of the aeration programme, contributing to their good performance in the dry spring weather.

The drain lines in Green 15 were visible where they had dried out slightly compared to the remainder of the green but we noted the very good depth of root in the sand rootzone over the drain lines.

Further drainage work is recommended on Greens 6 and 9 and at the rear of Green 13, as these are now some of the wetter greens on the course.

A liquid nitrogen fertiliser and three applications of Primo Maxx had been applied to date and a further application was to be applied the week following my visit. I was told that 74 kg of nitrogen had been applied to the greens so far this year, which is slightly more than in the past. It is not anticipated that much more will be applied this year.

No moss was seen in the greens turf and there were no disease scars. The fact that good quality greens turf can be produced without the overuse of fungicide is commendable.

Occasional plants of white clover were seen in the greens but these had been spot-treated. Some toad rush and mouse-ear chickweed was also seen in Green 17. All of these weeds need to be eliminated from the turf by continuous spot treating.

Those greens which contain small areas of perennial ryegrass and Yorkshire fog (such as Green 15) should be spot-treated using Rescue herbicide in September.

Fescue seed should be in stock ready to seed into these areas so that this fineleaved grass can take the place of the coarse grasses as they die out. There may be some temporary discolouration of the turf in the treated areas, but I have found elsewhere that these do not affect the golf.

Compared to the rest of the greens, the turf on the Putting Green contained more bare ground. It is unfortunate that this green cannot be made bigger as it receives a lot of wear and is in heavy shade through the winter, which affects grass growth. Slightly more nitrogen fertiliser would encourage a denser turf here, though fusarium attack would also become more likely.

Mowing height on the tees was 12 mm, which is a standard tees cutting height.

Areas of white clover were seen around the course, mainly in the semi-rough and rough. I suggest a weed control contractor be brought in next year to spray the whole course with specialist equipment, as this would be more efficient.

Occasional dandelions and other broadleaved weeds were seen in bunker banks etc, and these should be controlled.

Plants of the pink flowered Himalayan Balsam along the stream edges should be removed before they set seed, as this is a serious weed of waterways.

I noted that the garden is much tidier than at the time of my previous visit. There is a dead conifer near the 18th green, which should be removed.

I look forward to visiting the course again in November.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if any problems arise in the meantime or if I can be of other assistance.

Yours sincerely

Robert Laycock
